Chevrolet Impala from Supernatural: A Car with a Soul
Over the years in Supernatural, villains changed, story arcs twisted and turned, and even the fates of the main characters shifted. But one thing never changed — the black 1967 Chevrolet Impala.

For Dean and Sam Winchester, it wasn’t just a way to get from one hunt to the next: it was part of the family, the third lead, and the beating heart of the entire series.
A symbol of family
Inside the Impala lives the entire Winchester legacy: the weapons hidden in the boot, the box of cassettes filled with ’70s and ’80s rock, and the story of how Dean inherited the car from his father.

The car is literally woven into their family history.
In one of the later seasons, it even serves as an anchor for memory, helping the brothers remember who they truly are.
From the very beginning, the creators wanted the show to feel like life on the road — endless drives across America in search of monsters.

The Impala, with its wide body, throaty V8, and menacing black paintwork, fit that vision perfectly. It wasn’t just a “hunter’s van on wheels,” it became the emotional centre of the story.
Under the skin
The 1967 Chevrolet Impala belonged to the model’s fourth generation. It was a full-size sedan, instantly recognisable by its long, heavy frame.
  • Engines: V8 range from 4.6 to 7.0 litres
  • Power: up to 425 bhp in the top versions
  • Key feature: rear-wheel drive and a hulking construction that gave the car its undeniable presence on the road

After Supernatural, the ’67 Impala became a cult icon among fans. People began restoring them, building replicas, and collecting scale models.

Behind the Wheel: Surprising Facts About the Chevrolet Impala in Supernatural

1. Mustang vs. Impala
Showrunner Eric Kripke originally wanted the brothers to drive a 1965 Ford Mustang.
But a neighbour convinced him otherwise: the Impala’s boot could fit a body, and its sheer bulk looked far more intimidating on the road.
That’s how the ’67 black Chevy became the “Baby” fans fell in love with.

2. More than one “Baby”
Across fifteen seasons, around eight or nine different Impalas were used.
There were “hero cars” for close-ups, dedicated stunt cars, and even stripped-down versions built specifically for action scenes.

3. Jensen Ackles took one home
When the series wrapped, Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) kept one of the hero cars.
Today, that Impala sits in his own garage — a piece of TV history he couldn’t let go.

4. Metallicar
The nickname Metallicar didn’t come from the writers’ room but from fans on the old Television Without Pity forum.
A playful mix of Metallica and car, it captured Dean’s taste in music and the car’s rock ’n’ roll aura.

5. The secret in the trunk
The Impala’s boot became iconic in its own right.
Packed with prop weapons — fake knives, crossbows, stakes — it was designed to feel like a real hunter’s arsenal.
For viewers, opening that trunk meant the Winchesters were ready for war.

6. “The most important object in the universe”
In Swan Song (Season 5 finale), Chuck calls the Impala “the most important object in the universe.”
That line cemented Baby as the Winchesters’ third family member, not just a car.

7. From cult car to collector’s item
After the show’s success, demand for 1967 Impalas spiked.
On today’s market they sell for tens of thousands: anywhere from $15–20k for standard models up to $40–50k or more for restored examples or screen-accurate “Baby” replicas.

It’s hard to imagine Supernatural without “Baby” — Dean’s affectionate nickname for the car. The Impala became as much a part of the brand as the soundtrack or the brothers’ leather jackets. For fans, it stands for friendship, loyalty, and the long road the Winchesters travelled together.
